The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced on Friday that it is awarding up to four new grants totaling just under $8 million to local organizations working to prevent or reduce chronic homelessness in their communities. These grants are in addition to $81.5 million in grants awarded under this program in September 2009.
This grant program is a key part in SAMHSA’s strategic initiative on homelessness. It is designed to provide essential mental health and substance use treatment services linked to permanent supportive housing targeted to chronically homeless individuals and families. These resources serve to reduce the barriers that homeless persons with mental and substance use disorders and their families experience in accessing effective programs that sustain recovery and stable housing.
